Rise and Grind Mondays - January 26, 2015

I was reading a book called Like a Virgin Secrets They Won’t Teach You at Business School. You hear all the time about how people instantly become successful but you don’t hear all the time about their failures. I was astonished when I read in the book about a fact about a band that became widely regarded as the greatest and most influential act of the rock era.

“In the early sixties the Beatles were turned away by no fewer than seven record labels before they found one willing to take them on. Seriously, seven record labels couldn’t see the potential in that band? So I did a little researching on the group and that stat amazed me more after I read this.

“According to the RIAA, the Beatles are the best-selling music artists in the United States, with 178 million certified units. They have had more number-one albums on the British charts and sold more singles in the UK than any other act. In 2008, the group topped Billboard magazine's list of the all-time most successful "Hot 100" artists; as of 2015, they hold the record for most number-one hits on the Hot 100 chart with twenty. They have received ten Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Best Original Score and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards. Collectively included in Time magazine's compilation of the twentieth century's 100 most influential people, they are the best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over 600 million records worldwide”

Yesterday, I was watching Sports Center and saw highlights of the Bulls-Heat game. Hassan Whiteside had a triple double – 14 points 13 rebounds 12 blocks. This is coming from a guy who 3 months ago was working on his game at a YMCA. He played in the D-League and oversees just hoping a NBA team would give him an opportunity. The Miami Heat gave him an opportunity and he’s making the most of it.

Before entering the 2012 NFL draft, Russell Wilson was projected to be a mid round pick. In his senior year at Wisconsin he threw for 3,175 yards 33 TD’s with only 4 INT. He also ran for 6 TD’s. He was selected in the 3rd round. Quarterbacks taken ahead of him were Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden, and Brock Osweiler. This Sunday, Wilson will be playing in his second straight Superbowl

The morale of the story is sometimes people don’t see your talent right away and just because they don’t doesn’t mean you should give up. Sometimes you have to be in the right situation for you to succeed. Sometimes you have to have the right people around you. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again. Now forget about your past failures and SEIZE the day.
